Meet the Artists Brings the Samara House Collection to Life

More than an art collection, the Samara House Collection reflects the heart and soul of a residence designed for strength, healing, and connection. That vision came to life during the recent Meet the Artists event at Samara House, where residents, guests and artists gathered to celebrate the collection and the stories behind its creation.

The event began outdoors beside Andre Harvey's striking Samara sculpture, with the building's green roof providing a beautiful backdrop. Executive Director Kathy Neylan welcomed attendees and reflected on the project's early beginnings, recalling the moment Creative Director Joe Karlik first toured the residence. Faced with expansive blank walls and endless possibilities, Karlik immediately saw an opportunity to create something extraordinary through art, helping to define the character and spirit of Samara House.

Karlik shared how that initial inspiration evolved into the Samara House Collection, a collaborative effort developed alongside curator Carla Massoni. Drawing on a network of accomplished artists, the pair assembled a diverse collection spanning watercolor, oil painting, silkscreen, metalwork, woodcut, handmade paper, photography, and printmaking.

Massoni introduced the eight artists in attendance, many of whom had traveled considerable distances to participate. Together, Karlik and Massoni described the collection as a true labor of love. Their goal was not simply to fill walls with artwork, but to create a meaningful experience through pieces that reflect the natural world and themes of hope, reflection, and renewal. Many works were chosen for specific locations within the residence, creating a seamless connection between art, architecture, and everyday life.

After the presentations, guests toured the Samara House Collection while enjoying hand-selected wines, light bites, and refreshments prepared by Chef Daragh. As residents and visitors explored more than 70 works - many commissioned for the residence - they met the artists and learned about the creative processes and inspiration behind each piece.

The evening offered a unique opportunity to experience the collection through the eyes of its creators, highlighting the power of art to inspire, enrich, and support a community designed not just for healing, but for living.
