Deborah Brooks, co-founder of the Michael J. Fox Foundation (MJFF), recently honored a resident's request to speak at Stonegates, sharing insights into the remarkable advances being made in Parkinson's disease research.
Brooks highlighted the groundbreaking progress achieved through the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI). In the 20 years since she and Michael J. Fox founded the organization, the Foundation has raised more than $2.5 billion for Parkinson's research and has helped transform the landscape of scientific discovery through its long-term commitment to finding better treatments and, ultimately, a cure.
She explained that more than 4,200 participants, including both individuals with Parkinson's disease and healthy control volunteers, have joined PPMI. Working alongside a world-class team at more than 50 academic research institutions, the initiative achieved a major breakthrough with the discovery of a Parkinson's biomarker. This biomarker provides researchers with a reliable way to identify Parkinson's disease, much like other clinical tests can distinguish specific illnesses from similar conditions.
Brooks also discussed how this discovery has fundamentally changed the course of Parkinson's research. By helping scientists more accurately identify and study the disease, the biomarker has accelerated the development of new treatments and improved the effectiveness of clinical trials. In addition, the Foundation has created a vast biobank of anonymized research samples that is freely available to scientists around the world. Today, more than 100 potential Parkinson's therapies are in development using this biomarker and the MJFF's research resources.
While Michael J. Fox first captured the world's attention through his celebrated entertainment career, his enduring legacy may well be his commitment to advancing Parkinson's research. Through the work of the Michael J. Fox Foundation, individuals affected by Parkinson's disease are empowered to be part of something greater, helping drive scientific progress and bringing hope to millions of families worldwide.
