Schoonover Series: The Art of the Dust Cover

Thursday, April 23rd at 4:30pm

John Schoonover will share with us 17 famous dust covers created by his grandfather plus we will be showcasing original works that his grandfather created which will include the original illustrations of both Treasure Island and Kidnapped.

The period from 1890 to 1940 is referred to as The Golden Age of American Illustration. During this period, illustrators had an enormous and enthusiastic following.  There were many candidates for the title of “America’s most popular illustrator.” Frank Schoonover was certainly one of the leading contenders. His body of work included over 2,000 book and magazine illustrations, as well as non-commissioned easel paintings.

The total of 2,510 artworks is featured in the Frank E. Schoonover catalogue Raisonné 2009. One exceptional group is seventeen dust jacket covers for Harper and Brothers Children’s Classics published during the 1920’s. Among them: Treasure Island, Kidnapped, Heidi, and Robinson Crusoe.
